The absence of traffic, the vast fields and valleys, and the enchanting country roads that wind their way between village and hamlet make for walks that lift the spirit and enrich the senses. Summer evenings make for pleasant walks, but the most beautiful time of year is from September to May. Even those who are not hardened walkers can stroll and look around the streets, noticing details that delight.

The quirkiness of the alleys and the centuries-old houses exert a magnetic attraction on those who wield a brush or a camera. The urge to capture these charming sights is impossible to resist, and those who lack the talent carry lasting impressions in their souls.

The great advantage of hiking in Gozo is the sheer variety of landscapes and character in such a small area: wind-swept cliffs, towers that have guarded the island for over 300 years, gorges with pebbles and rushing waves, clover-strewn fields, and chapels nestled in lonely valleys, through which freshwater springs seep. One is the remarkable chapel of the Annunciation, in the valley of the same name, built in 1347 and rebuilt in the 17th century. Also spectacular is Wardija, where the remains of a Roman sanctuary stand in dramatic solitude on one of the highest points on the island.

The secluded chapel of San Dimitri is a place to dream and remember the legend of a widow who lost her son to pirates and desperately prayed for a painting of San Dimitri. The saint immediately rode out of the painting on his horse and crossed the sea to return with the young man. The woman’s gratitude was eternal, and she burned a lamp under the painting for the rest of her days. There is a wide variety of very rewarding walks in valleys, around hills, or along the coastline where there is always something new to discover. Those with stronger leg muscles and more energy can rent a bike and brave the hills, cycling past carob trees, capers and prickly pears.

When booking directly through our site (https://www.tamariemerhba.com/nl/book), with a minimum stay of 4 nights, you will be offered the fifth night free. The offer is valid for September, October and November (2021). All rooms include a full breakfast. It is definitely worth it!
